Nature’s gentle alternative to retinol

📍 Home: India

INCI: Bakuchiol

Retinol (vitamin A) is one of the best-known anti-ageing ingredients, but many women find it too harsh. It can leave skin dry, flaky and stinging, especially mature and sensitive skin. That’s why I was so excited to discover bakuchiol.

Bakuchiol comes from the seeds of the babchi plant (Psoralea corylifolia), which has been used in traditional Indian Ayurvedic and Chinese practices for centuries. It isn’t related to retinol at all, but it works in a similar way on the skin, gently and without the harshness.

What the research says: in a 12-week study published in the British Journal of Dermatology (2019), women using bakuchiol saw similar improvements in the look of wrinkles and pigmentation to those using retinol, and the bakuchiol group reported less dryness and stinging.

Why we chose it: to help skin look smoother, firmer and more even, with fewer visible fine lines, while staying kind to mature and sensitive skin. It’s 100% plant-based.

Good to know: bakuchiol is lovely in your evening ritual. And whatever you use, a daily SPF is always the best friend of youthful-looking skin.
